This week we are encouraged to honour our former statesman, Nelson Mandela, and give thanks for his life, his leadership and his devotion to humanity and humanitarian causes by devoting 67 minutes of our time to give back to those in need.
The Synthesis Software Technologies team celebrated Mandela’s legacy and the centenary of his birth on 19 July by partnering with Afrika Tikkun. The team dedicated their time to the community in Diepsloot at the Afrika Tikkun Wings of Life Centre by painting and decorating the walls of three nursery school classrooms, preparing lunch for 250 children and laying a carpet in the school library. Further initiatives included providing career guidance to high school learners and cleaning the school grounds.
Afrika Tikkun was founded in 1994 with the goal to make a difference in the South African economy by developing and uplifting young people living in underprivileged communities. The non-profit organisation strives to provide holistic development in disadvantaged communities by empowering youth and affording them with the opportunity to receive gainful education, good health care, nutrition and support for their families. More specifically, Afrika Tikkun’s programmes are focused on early childhood development, child and youth development, career development, family support services, primary health care, the empowerment programme and a nutrition and food security programme.
Synthesis’ partnership with Afrika Tikkun started in 2011, and over the years, the company has invested significantly in the development of youth from cradle to career by providing a holistic set of educational, health, and social services. From employee engagement activities, to donations of food, furniture, stationery, and funds, to the holistic support of individual careers, Synthesis’ support has enabled Afrika Tikkun to bring about significant impact to the lives of disadvantaged communities in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
