The fintech company’s annual charity drive delivers food, toiletries and school shoes to vulnerable families and grade R children.
Home-grown South African financial-technology company Synthesis held their annual charity drive on 6 and 7 December this year, with employees distributing parcels to vulnerable families and grade R children in Alexandra and Braamfontein respectively.
Twenty-five vulnerable families in Alexandra, who live on less than R10 a day, received food parcels and toiletries, while sixty-seven grade R children received school shoes and school bags with stationery to prepare them for their first year of primary school in 2019.
“I’m delighted to see the generosity that Synthesis employees have once again shown when it comes to supporting this worthy cause,” said Michael Shapiro, Synthesis’ Managing Director. “Our charity drives, in partnership with Afrika Tikkun, provide assistance to these deserving beneficiaries, and have come to mean a great deal to our staff.”
The handovers took place at Afrika Tikkun centres in Braamfontein and Alexandra. Synthesis’ partnership with education and development specialists Afrika Tikkun started in 2011, and over the years, the company has invested significantly in the development of youth from cradle to career by providing a holistic set of educational, health, and social services.
From employee engagement activities, to donations of food, furniture, stationery, and funds, to the holistic support of individual careers, Synthesis’ support has enabled Afrika Tikkun to bring about significant impact to the lives of disadvantaged communities in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
In 2017, Synthesis began to incorporate career development as part of its skills development mandate. Since then it has provided 38 young people from disadvantaged communities with opportunities to participate in a 12-month business administration learnership, giving these young people the all-important first concrete opportunity to start building lifelong careers.
Over the years, Synthesis has also contributed significantly to Afrika Tikkun’s information technology and career development programmes, which now reach over 5 500 learners and youth from pre-school all the way to unemployed post-matriculants.
